Planning to visit the Road World Championships? Here’s what you need to know about Rwanda Rwanda, also known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” is one of Africa’s most beautiful and unique cycling destinations. The country offers breathtaking views, challenging climbs, and a rich culture. Whether you’re planning to take a guided cycling tour or plan your own adventure, there are a few key things you should know before you hit the road. Here are ten things you need to know when cycling in Rwanda. 1. The hills can be steep Rwanda is often called the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” and for good reason. The landscape is mountainous, with numerous climbs (both short and long). Roads can vary from asphalt to gravel. If you’re planning on doing long rides, expect to regularly face steep climbs of 1,000 to 1,500 meters in elevation gain per day. This makes it a great destination for athletic cyclists looking for a challenge. 2. The climate is tropical, but the altitude makes it cooler Rwanda’s climate is tropical, but it is tempered by the altitude. Most cycling routes are between 1,000 and 2,000 meters above sea level, making it pleasantly cool, even in the warmer months. Average temperatures in the lower elevations (around 1,000 meters) are between 20°C and 30°C, while higher elevations can be cooler. It is important to pack a variety of layers when cycling in Rwanda, so that you can adjust to changes in temperature as you change altitude. 3. Expect a variety of terrain Cycling in Rwanda is a varied adventure. You’ll cycle through rural villages, along Lake Kivu, through vast tea plantations and through dense rainforests. Some areas will be on paved roads, while others can be more technical. The variety of terrain makes Rwanda a fantastic destination for adventurous cyclists who want to experience a bit of everything. 4. Roads can be unpredictable Rwanda has invested significantly in improving its infrastructure in recent years. In general, the asphalt roads are in good condition. When you leave the asphalt roads, the roads are still in poor condition in some places, especially outside the larger cities. This is especially true for the gravel roads and the unpaved paths that wind through the mountains. Sometimes the roads can be muddy or dusty, depending on the season. So it is important to be prepared for rough roads and to ride a gravel bike or mountain bike. 5. Road safety and road users Rwanda has relatively little traffic compared to other African countries, but traffic can be chaotic in the larger cities such as Kigali. It is important to be alert for motorcyclists, pedestrians and trucks. There is a lot of cycling in Rwanda among the local population. You will notice that. Other traffic generally takes cyclists into account. 6. Don't forget to refill your water and snacks in time The range of shops and restaurants can be limited in remote areas. Make sure you have plenty of water and snacks for longer rides. In many rural areas there are small stalls where you can buy local food such as bananas, potatoes and bread, but for longer rides it is advisable to bring your own energy bars, fruit and water. Hydration is essential, especially if you are cycling in mountainous terrain. 7. Rwanda is welcoming and friendly Rwanda is known for the friendliness of its people. As you cycle through the country, you will often be greeted by curious villagers who will cheer you on and wave enthusiastically. The locals are generally very welcoming and open, and although most people speak Kinyarwanda, you can also use English or French in the larger towns. Although friendly and welcoming, the locals also see tourists as cash cows. Children in particular will shout Muzungu or Money at you all day long. It takes some getting used to and can be uncomfortable. 8. Rwanda has a rich culture and history Rwanda is not only a country of beautiful nature, but also of rich culture and history. You can come across some impressive cultural and historical sites along the way, such as the Genocide Memorial in Kigali, where you can learn more about the tragic events of 1994, when 1,000,000 (mainly) Tutsis were murdered in 90 days. It is a good idea to spend some time in the cities to understand more about the history of the country. 9. Health and vaccinations When travelling to Rwanda, you should pay close attention to the necessary vaccinations. Make sure you are vaccinated against diseases such as hepatitis A, typhoid, DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, polio) and yellow fever. As malaria is also prevalent in Rwanda, it is advisable to take or consider taking anti-malaria medication. Consult your doctor for up-to-date travel advice and vaccinations before you travel. 10. Respect the environment and local communities Rwanda is one of the greenest countries in Africa and has many protected nature reserves, such as the Volcanoes National Park, where you can see mountain gorillas. It is important to respect the environment, not to leave any waste behind and to support local nature projects. Bonus: Cycling trip to the 2025 World Cycling Championships Rwanda has positioned itself in recent years as a top destination for cycling tourism. With CYCLOsportive we offer a fully guided cycling trip through the country's mountainous landscape, from the capital Kigali to the impressive Lake Kivu.
GF Strade Bianche is a must-do event Do you like gravel? Do you like Italy? Do you like gravel? Then GF Strade Bianche is a great event to participate in! In March, our fifth visit to GF Strade Bianche is planned. In this article, we would like to look back at last year's edition. Beep beep beep, the alarm goes off It is early, very early when Team CYCLOsportive wakes up. The truck with all the bikes and luggage of the 25 participants is ready to leave for Tuscany. A few days earlier, the participants handed in their belongings and we carefully loaded everything. In two days, we transport all the luggage and the bikes to Siena. A luxury for the participants. They leave for Florence one day after us. By plane. In Florence, they are picked up by a bus and taken to the hotel in Siena. As supervisors, we managed to arrive in Siena, at Borgo Grondaie, on time. All bikes are unloaded and ready for a first ride through the Tuscan hills. The participants' suitcases are neatly placed in their rooms. Just like the goodie bags. Everything has been thought of. Also read: Keep cycling in autumn and winter Get on your bike and go! Once all participants have settled in their rooms, it is time for a first ride through the Tuscan hills. Everyone has had a long journey and we therefore start with a short ride of about 40 km. Mainly on asphalt and with one gravel strip. Not just any gravel strip. Le Tolfe, the strip where Van der Poel made a merciless attack during his victory in Strade Bianche 2021. Here we immediately notice that what the pros do is almost supernatural. It all looks easy, but for us mortals it is a different story. We are spoiled during dinner The first ride is over. The first stories/experiences are shared. The energy needs to be replenished. We do that in the restaurant of Borgo Grondaie. We have been organizing trips to Italy for years now. Every time we ask ourselves: 'Can you eat badly here?'. The answer is again no. What a pleasure it is to taste the Italian cuisine every time! Also read: How to prevent travel legs Preparation for GF Strade Bianche At the table during dinner it is sometimes forgotten. We are here to cycle and prepare for the Granfondo on Sunday. The glasses of wine are filled and soon the atmosphere among the participants is more than pleasant. Cycling connects, it is always nice to see how strangers quickly become acquaintances (sometimes even friends) of each other. On day two there is an extensive ride (70 km) on the program. A number of sections of the GF Strade Bianche are explored. Gravel professionals Piotr Havik and Daan Grosemans teach us the finer points of cycling on gravel. The support car is always nearby to quickly help us get back on the road in case of a breakdown. Halfway through the ride the support car is waiting for us so that everyone can refill their water bottles. After the ride, the participants enjoy a lunch prepared by the hotel. While the participants are resting in bed, we go to Siena as an escort to pick up the starting certificates. The 'Tour' is won in bed. Watching the pros, what a spectacle! The last day before the Granfondo there is always a short ride on the program and we go to watch the pros. During our short ride we ride towards the ladies. Watching the pros is always quite a spectacle. After the ride we quickly head towards Le Tolfe. The strip is a few kilometers from our hotel, ideal! It is busy, the people are four rows deep waiting for what is to come. The tension slowly builds up. The race is followed on telephones and people look in the air to see if the helicopter is approaching. The characteristic sound of the race! The engines, racing cars, the honking! It all makes the race fans go crazy with tension. When Tadej Pogacar comes thundering onto the strip after a long wait, the crowd explodes. This might be the highlight of the trip to GF Strade Bianche. Also read: Why book a group trip? Our own Strade Bianche On Sunday we all sit down for breakfast early. From the hotel it is about 2 km by bike to the start. In March it is cold in the morning in Siena! `With an extra jacket it is easy to do, but where do you put it? Supervisors Martin and Sjaak walk along the starting boxes to collect all the jackets. Then they rush to the first point where the participants can refill their water bottles. During the Granfondo we have planned extra care for our participants at three points. After 30, 80 and 110 km. The stories we hear from the participants also make it a very nice experience for the supervisors at the care stations. Enthusiasm, suffering, blood, sweat and tears. It all comes along that day. In Siena, on Piazza del Campo, only happy faces. The finish has been reached. Euphorically we gather at one of the many restaurants in the centre of the beautiful city. One pizza after another is ordered and is quickly eaten. One story is even more beautiful than the other. Each participant has experienced his own adventure. Beautiful! Do you want to experience this adventure too? GF STRADE BIANCHE

In March, our fifth visit to GF Strade Bianche is planned. In this article, we would like to look back on last year's edition.

Beep beep beep the alarm goes off

It is early, very early when Team CYCLOsportive wakes up. The truck with all the bikes and luggage of the 25 participants is ready to leave for Tuscany. A few days earlier, the participants have handed in their stuff and we have carefully loaded everything. In two days we transport all the luggage and the bikes to Siena. A luxury for the participants. They leave for Florence one day after us. By plane. In Florence they are picked up by a bus and taken to the hotel in Siena.

As guides we managed to get to Siena on time, Borgo Grondaie, to arrive. All bikes are unloaded and ready for a first ride through the Tuscan hills. The participants' suitcases are neatly stored in their rooms. Just like the goodie bags. Everything has been thought of.

Also read: Keep cycling in autumn and winter

Get on your bike and go!

Once all participants have settled in their rooms, it is time for a first ride through the Tuscan hills. Everyone has had a long journey and so we start with a short ride of about 40 km.

We are spoiled during dinner

The first ride is over.

Preparation for GF Strade Bianche

At the dinner table it is sometimes forgotten. Gravel pros Piotr Havik and Daan Grosemans teach us the tricks of the trade of cycling on gravel. The support car is always nearby to quickly help us get back on the road in case of breakdowns. Halfway through the ride the support car is waiting for us so that everyone can refill their water bottles. After the ride the participants enjoy the lunch prepared by the hotel. While the participants are resting in bed we go to Siena as support to pick up the starting numbers. The 'Tour' is won in bed.

Watching the pros, what a spectacle!

The last day before the Granfondo there is always a short ride on the program and we go and watch the pros. During our short ride we ride towards the ladies. Watching the pros is always quite a spectacle. After the ride we quickly head towards Le Tolfe. The strip is a few kilometers from our hotel, ideal! It is busy, people are four rows deep waiting for what is to come. The tension slowly builds up. The race is followed on phones and people look in the air to see if the helicopter is approaching yet. The characteristic sound of the race! The engines, race cars, the honking! It all makes the race fans go crazy with tension. When Tadej Pogacar thunders onto the strip after a long wait, the crowd explodes. This may well be the highlight of the trip to GF Strade Bianche.

Our own Strade Bianche

On Sunday we all sit down early for breakfast. The stories we hear from the participants also make it a wonderful experience for the supervisors at the care stations. Enthusiasm, suffering, blood, sweat and tears. It all passes by that day. In Siena, on Piazza del Campo, only happy faces. The finish has been reached. Euphorically we gather at one of the many restaurants in the centre of the beautiful city. One pizza after the other is ordered and is quickly devoured. One story is more beautiful than the other. Each participant has experienced his own adventure. Beautiful!

Challenging cycling in a picture-postcard environment Put the Dolomites at the top of your bucket list: perhaps the most beautiful part of Europe. And what do you want to do in beautiful mountainous locations? Cycling of course! If you go that way, which steps should you take? We help you. The passes of the Maratona The Giro always visits the Dolomites and Italy's largest Granfondo takes place here. In this way, cycling tourism is stimulated and for good reason. The passes of the route sound like the lyrics of a song: Passo Campolongo, Passo, Gardena, Passo Pordoi, Passo Sella, Passo Giau and Passo Valparola. Also read: The unique Sella Ronda North of the Sella Ronda: Passo delle Erbe and Krohnplatz In addition to the passes of the Maratona, there is much more to experience in this part of Italy. Take the Passo delle Erbe for example, which you can officially enter in 5 directions. The west side via Millan or the east side from San Martin de Tor are recommended. The road surface is good here, it will certainly be challenging. The west side is 28 km long, where the last 10 km you feel like you are in a kind of no man's land. The east side is considerably shorter with almost 14 km of climbing, so you will often find gradients in the double figures here. The views along the way and especially at the top make it more than worth the challenge! The Krohnplatz is a well-known ski resort, but can of course also be done by bike. To get to the real top, you still have 5.5 km of unpaved roads with serious gradients to choose from. If this is too much for you, stay on the asphalt of the Passo Furcia. An irregular climb from both sides with often enough double figures. So take heed. Also read: Maratona dles Dolomietes, the complete routes South of the Sella Ronda: Passo Fedaia and Passo San Pellegrino If you stay south of the Sella Ronda, there is also plenty of beautiful things to see. For example, the Passo Fedaia and Passo San Pellegrino are known for their mountain lakes at the top. They sailed around the Marmolada massif, an impressive mass of rock. It was on the Passo Fedaia where a few years ago Jai Hindley rode the Ecuadorian Carapaz out of the pink. It is a typical Dolomite pass, with calf-consuming percentages at the end. The west side is a lot better. Unique for the Dolomites: there is 2.5 km of flat road. Be careful at the top of the Passo Fedaia... While the Fedaia is traffic-calmed, it is a bit busier on the Passo San Pellegrino. That doesn't get in the way of the fun. This pass is longer, less steep and simply enjoyable. Those few cars aren't going to change that! Also read: Gravel Experience Dolomites Around Cortina d'Ampezzo: Passo Tre Croci and Tre Cime di Lavaredo Continue to the famous ski village of Cortina d'Ampezzo, located in a beautiful valley surrounded by various massifs. Worth a visit in itself, but of course you have to climb. To the west of the village is the Passo Falzarego which turns into the Passo Valparola. Even more beautiful: the east side. First comes the difficult Passo Tre Croci. With 8km at 7.5% it seems doable, but it is a treacherous climb due to the irregularity. Above all, keep enough energy in the tank. You continue charging along the beautiful Lago di Misurina for the big challenge. The pass with the most beautiful name of all: Tre Cime di Lavaredo. At the top (walk 200 meters of gravel further) you will find three pointed stone massifs and a breathtaking view. However, before you get there, you can conquer 7.5km a 8.7%. This seems doable, but remember that there is a flat kilometer and a descending kilometer in between. This means that the remaining 5.5km are 12-13% on average. So toil! More inspiration?
Unique passes with breathtaking views It is 6:15 on the first Sunday of July. The day of the Marathon. You are at the starting line in La Ila, together with thousands of other cyclists. You leave at 6:30. From then on you only hear and see bicycles and cyclists. We will tell you everything about the routes you can cycle during the Maraton. On a completely car-free route! The first few hours are a bit busy on the climbs and there is chatting and laughing. Although, the further you go, the more you hear laboring and heavy breathing. Especially on a climb like the Passo Giau. Very special to experience that the roads are truly car-free and you can conquer the mountains together with like-minded people. An insight into the routes. Three routes: Sella Ronda, Mediofondo and Maratona During the event you can choose three distances: the Sella Ronda of 55km, the Mediofondo of 106km or the Granfondo Maratona of 138km. For all three routes you start with the Sella Ronda from Corvara. The first climb is the Passo Campolongo, followed by the Pordoi, Sella and Gardena. Logically, Corvara is also your finish if you cycle the shortest distance. You will then have climbed approximately 1780 meters in altitude. We have already explored this round in depth for you. Click here for more information about the Sella Ronda Mediofondo. If you go for the Mediofondo, you will gain more than 1300 meters of elevation gain for a total of 3100 elevation meters. After passing through Corvara, you can conquer the Passo Campolongo again, after which you turn left in Arabba. After an undulating intermediate section, you arrive in Cernadoi. Here you can go straight ahead for the Granfondo route. This is only allowed if you arrive at this point on time. If you are late or if you want to do the Mediofondo anyway, turn left and start directly at the Passo Falzarego. This is a lovely walking climb of 10.5km at 6.3%. However, the devil is in the tail, at the top you turn left to the Passo Valparola. You still get 1.5km of 8% with a peak of 12%. After a beautiful descent you arrive back at the starting point of La Ila. Instead of the shortest route to Corvara, you get a dessert: the Mur dl Giat, or the Cat Wall. Truly a wall of 0.4km at 13.4% with a maximum of 19%. After this it is another 3km false flat to Corvara for the finish. Click here for our trip to the Maratona dles Dolomites Granfondo Maratona dles Dolomites Are you on time and are you going for the full distance of 138km with 4230 meters of elevation gain? Then you go straight ahead at Cernadoi. You continue your way into the valley. Here follows a climb of 2.3km at 7.5% towards Selva di Cadore. Keep your powder dry, because 4km later the Passo Giau, the executioner of the Maratona, starts. At 9.9km a 9.3%, a climb that demands the utmost from you. You immediately start with stretches in double figures and the climb never falls below 8%. Once you have reached the top, a beautiful and clear descent awaits you. This route also includes the Mur dl Giat for dessert, before you can collect your medal in Corvara. Will you join us in 2025? Challenge and enjoyment are guaranteed during the Maratona.
Why the Sella Ronda should be on your bucket list You are in the mountains and want to cycle around, just like at home. Almost every lap you can make is almost a Gran Fondo in itself. Conquering mountain ridges and cycling to other valleys is a tough task. Especially in the high mountains. However, there are a few places where you can make a nice round, which are easy to do. And don't miss one of those rounds in perhaps the most beautiful part of Europe: The Sella Ronda! What makes the Sella Ronda so beautiful? The Sella Ronda is located in the middle of the Dolomites. This mountain range is characterized by the flattened mountain peaks. The landscape is beautifully green and towards the top of a mountain it looks as if a massive beige block has been thrown on top of the mountain. This sandy color comes from history. The massive blocks were coral reefs in the ocean millions of years ago. Very special, especially because the color palette provides beautiful contrasts and unique views. The Sella Ronda is a circuit around one of the largest massifs in the Dolomites: the Sella massif. Read also: Maratona dles Dolomites, this is what you need to know The Sella Ronda dissected The circuit is 51.5 km long and consists of 4 passes that are connected to each other: The Passo Campolongo, Passo Pordoi, Passo Sella and Passo Gardena. You will overcome approximately 1700 meters of altitude. It is not a meter flat and that is an advantage, because this means that the gradients are manageable. During the tour you will not go below 1500 meters above sea level and 3 of the 4 peaks are above 2000 meters. All in all, the Sella Ronda is suitable as a nice goal for the novice cyclist. Moreover, cycling with beautiful views gives morale, and there is no shortage of that in this area! Also read: Why should you book a group trip? How do you best experience the Sella Ronda? Due to the beautiful landscape, the Sella Ronda is popular among motorcyclists and drivers of fast cars. Fortunately, cycling is almost a religion in Italy. This beautiful route is therefore closed to motorized traffic for a number of days a year. Twice a year there is the Sella Ronda Bike Day with only cyclists on the road. This is not a competition or event with timing. Then we have the best organized Gran Fondo in Europe: the Maratona dles Dolomites. The first part of the Maratona is the Sella Ronda. You can then finish, but the Medio and Gran Fondo go a little further. More about that later. Click here for our trip to the Maratona dles Dolomites Plenty of reasons to be excited about this round.

1 Prepare well!

It seems obvious, but on our trips we regularly notice that people make mistakes when it comes to preparation. The Maratona dles Dolomites has 138 tough kilometers through the Dolomites with more than 4,000 meters of elevation gain. Whether you want to perform with a fast time as a result or 'just' finish the tour, you will have to be well prepared at the start to achieve your goal.

Also read: Cycling in the mountains: Stacking! Or not?

2 Train enough for the Marathon

Preparation for the Maratona starts with good training for the tough trip through the Dolomites. Training is not about cycling 40 km a few times a week. However, you don't have to get on your bike like a madman every day. Nowadays you can prepare yourself for a tour like the Maratona using the JOIN training app. You set your goal in the app and the available time to cycle and JOIN then creates a training schedule. Are you unable to train or are you ill? No problem. JOIN takes these types of variables into account and automatically adjusts the schedule. Do you really want to be well prepared? Then take an exercise test and use the test results to start working on a training schedule at least three months before the Maratona. Also make sure that the altitude meters in the Dolomites are not your first altitude meters. Go cycling in South Limburg, the Eifel or the Ardennes.

3 Test with the sports nutrition you are going to use

Sports nutrition is often underestimated when it comes to properly preparing for a Granfondo. We bring sports drinks from Power bar. All participants can fill their water bottles with our sports drink every day. In terms of sports nutrition, you can get a special one from us Granfondo nutritional package order from Kalkman Good Energy. This way you have exactly enough nutrition for every ride. It is not a good idea to only start cycling with our sports nutrition during your stay in the Dolomites. You don't know how your body reacts to new food.

Therefore, test the nutrition at home during your training rides. Kalkman has a nice one for that sample pack composed. In addition to testing the nutrition, we also advise you to train eating on the bike. Can you still eat well during high exertion or at the end of a tough ride? Or is it only possible to swallow gels at the end? Make sure you train it well in advance. Let your body get used to ingesting 90 gr. carbohydrates per hour. Your body will protest if you only start doing this in the Dolomites.

Also read: You go on a cycling trip and take…

4 What will the weather be like?

We are not weather forecasters. What we do know from experience is that the weather can change quickly in the mountains. Make sure you are prepared for that. Always bring clothing for different weather conditions. Arm and leg warmers, rain jacket, windbreaker/sleeveless body, overshoes and gloves, take it all with you in the suitcase. Of course, not all of this can be taken on the bike. That is why it is so useful that we have access to a support vehicle. Prepare a bag with extra cycling clothing if the weather turns and put it in the support vehicle. This way you will never be surprised by the weather.

5 How are you guided by CYCLOsportive?

At CYCLOsportive, three guides (tour guide, mechanic and masseur) always accompany you on your trip. The tour guide ensures a carefree stay in the Dolomites and can be contacted by the participants about anything and everything. The tour guide will discuss the program with the participants every day in a briefing and will also guide a group on bicycles. The tour guide always has a first aid kit with him. Safety is very important to us, so listen carefully to the instructions of the supervisor. We don't find it very interesting to descend at 100 km/h, for example. The mechanic is present to carry out minor repairs to the bicycle if necessary. The masseur ensures that all participants can be massaged at least once. The mechanic and masseur will also accompany a group on bicycles or will drive the support vehicle that takes part in the rides that we will make prior to the Maratona.

Also read: 10 tips if you go cycling in the mountains

6 What is the average level of the participants?

The participants who come with us come in all shapes and sizes and at all different levels. It is certainly not the case that you have to be half a professional to travel with CYCLOsportive. The participants include people who cycle the Mediofondo (106 km) and people who cycle the Granfondo (138 km). You will have to train for both distances (see point 2). The average level of the participants are cyclists who can cycle on average on a flat route between 27-32 km/h in the Netherlands. During the trip we will always divide the group into two smaller groups so that we can cycle with all participants at their own level. The supervisors ensure that you do not cycle too fast. Make sure you know what power/heart rate you can maintain for a long time without burning yourself out. The Maratona is a long and tough trip, you don't want to drive too much in the red. Practice this in your preparation.

7 Your bike in top condition

You train hard for the Maratona, so don't forget your bike! It must be in top condition just like you. We recommend taking your bike to a racing bike specialist for major maintenance. When descending the Passo Campolongo or Passo Pordoi, you want your brakes to function properly. Check whether your tires are still good. It is ideal to fit a new set of tires before the trip. Also have the switching system checked. There is nothing more annoying than a bicycle that does not shift properly.

Also read: Check your equipment prior to the trip

8 What resistance do I need?

Make sure you can continue to make at least sixty pedal revolutions per minute. Better yet: ride with flexibility. This way you continue to climb efficiently, you don't put too much strain on your knees and your muscles tire less quickly.

With the resistance you should be able to make at least sixty revolutions per minute

Select the crankset: a semi-compact (52/36) is a great choice for most

Make sure you have a cassette with sufficient switching options, for example an 11/32 or 11/34

9 Is the route car-free?

Many Granfondo's organizations boast that the route is completely car-free. The Maratona organization is the only organization (as far as we know) that actually makes this happen. The roads will be closed to motorized traffic all day from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. As a participant you will not be bothered by cars overtaking you.

10 In which accommodation do we stay with CYCLOsportive?

The trip to the Maratona is one of the most popular trips in our offer. In total, 20 enthusiastic cyclists will join us on the trip to the Dolomites. At CYCLOsportive, we value personal attention. We will stay in Hotel Melodia del BoscoThe hotel is excellently equipped to welcome cyclists and is ideally located in relation to the start/finish.

Kofferstress?

Suitcase stress? We help you!

You are now an expert in packing your suitcase for a city trip, for example. But what should you pay extra attention to when going on (your first) cycling holiday? What should not be missing from the packing list? What things should you not forget? We help you with a handy checklist, so you don't forget anything!

Stuff that's easy to forget

Let's start with your standard equipment on the bike. You will be making long rides, so we recommend 2 750ml water bottles. Cyclists often drink too little, so take enough with you. We also always apply butt fat to prevent irritation. A handlebar bag is recommended in the mountains. Then you can take some extra clothes with you for when the weather changes.

Of course you also have a bicycle computer to keep track of your performance. You also have a front and rear light on your bike. When you cycle in the mountains, you regularly come across a tunnel. There are also usually no cycle paths abroad, so make sure you are visible. Bring chargers and/or batteries for the bicycle computer and lights. Flat batteries are also useful if your speed, cadence or power meter breaks down.

Useful extras

Extra things you don't often think about... Your bicycle is being transported, so you have handy foam rollers to protect the important parts. You can also take tape with you to repair minor damage to your handlebar tape. This often happens when 2 bicycles are going to the mountains.

You are going to cycle for a long time in nature, so take it all in. If you prefer to listen to music or a podcast, Shokz are recommended. This way you can continue to hear the ambient sounds. By the way, you cannot always pay with your phone or debit card abroad. Finally, a so-called ass saver is nice when the road is wet. Then the water will not splash against your buttocks and you will prevent it from chafing on your long ride.

Checklist of useful items

Butt fat or chamois cream

Bidons (Neem er een aantal extra mee voor onze eigen bevoorradingspost op de Campolongo. De deelnemers komen daar 2x langs. Na ± 10 km en na 65 km.)

Handlebar bag

Bicycle computer

Chargers

(Flat) batteries

Lights

Foam and tape

Earphones or Shokz

Ass saver

Cash money, Phone, debit card and ID

Your bicycle in optimal condition

Nothing is worse than having your bike break down while you have a nice ride planned. Therefore, make sure that your bike arrives at the start in good condition. You also clean your bike neatly after every ride. Of course you want to shine during your cycling highlight of the year!

Also read: Check your equipment before the trip!

Maintenance items checklist

Saddle bag

Spare items: inner tubes, tire levers, CO2 cartridges and attachment

Bicycle pump with barometer

Allen key

Chain tool with spare link

Boa repair kit for your cycling shoes

Any other tools and spare items

Degreaser

Brushes

Wash mitt or towels

Chain oil or wax

Food is your fuel

It happened on the mountain with perhaps the most beautiful name, the Tre Cime de Lavaredo in the Dolomites. This climb is not very long, but the last 4km of 12% are very tough. I needed some quick energy and had a gel in my back pocket, which I took. I had never had this gel before and I knew that. My stomach practically turned during an already strenuous effort. The most important advice: train regularly at home with the sports nutrition you want to take with you!

Also read: Cycling in the mountains: Stacking! Or not?

Gels

Bars

Sports drink

Energy tablets

Clothing in the mountains

Take 2 or more sets of basic cycling clothing with you, so that you do not have to wash every day. And then it also has time to dry, of course. What items of clothing should you consider when going on a cycling holiday in the mountains?

Traveling with CYCLOsportive

As you can read, there are quite a few things to think about for your bike trip to the mountains. And then we haven't even talked about what else can break on your bike, such as spokes, brake pads, cables, etc. If you go on a bike trip to the mountains with us, we will take care of everything for you. There is a mechanic who will always get your bike going again. It is always useful if you bring some spare material yourself. We take sports drinks from Powerbar on all trips. You can fill your water bottle for the rides. You must bring your own sports bars and gels.

This way you are the king at Strade Bianche. Are you planning to travel to Siena in the spring to ride the GF Strade Bianche? Then we have some useful tips for you here. Which bike are you going to ride on the gravel strips with? What tire choice do you make? What tire pressure do you start with? What is the correct technique? Enough to worry about. We will give you a helping hand. Text & image: Gerrit Vermeulen We have been present at GF Strade Bianche with CYCLOsportive for years. Our conclusion was unanimous: WHAT A GREAT EVENT! What we have also seen a lot are participants with all kinds of different types of material. If you are going on an MTB tour, take the mountain bike. If you are going to cycle on the road, you take the racing bike. As soon as you cycle on gravel, you suddenly see everything passing by. Road bike, mountain bike, gravel bike and everything else available in bicycles. Everything seems to come together on gravel. In addition to the choice of bicycle, a choice must also be made for a tire. Much, little or no profile. Narrow or wide tires and what is the correct tire pressure... Sleepless nights! THE best bike We did not do any scientific research, but simply looked around us. GF Strade Bianche can easily be ridden on a racing bike. No, no buts. We hear you. It is true that Strade Bianche is the Italian name for gravel road. Have you seen the pros start on a gravel bike with 40 mm tires? We neither. Yes, but they are pros, they can cycle much better. We can indeed assume that. But still. The Granfondo Strade Bianche is 130 km long. 'Only' 40 km takes the participants over gravel. This means that 100 km are driven on asphalt. So you won't have an advantage with a gravel bike for most of the ride. THE best tire Now that we have determined the bike for the beautiful Strade Bianche in Tuscany, we can start looking at the right tire choice. In 2020 we cycled around Tuscany with 25 mm tires. To be precise, the Schwalbe Pro One TLE. Was this ideal? It was March and it had rained quite a bit in the days before our arrival. It was wet and slippery in some areas. It is not so much the choice of tires that is important. How you deal with the circumstances. If you choose 25 mm tires, you must use your common sense in wet weather on the strips. Of course, a 28 mm tire provides a little more security. And nowadays it is even possible to cycle with 30 mm tires. Please note, they do not fit in every frame. At the 2021 edition, the roads were dusty and bone dry. You never know in advance what the circumstances will be. But our advice is to install tires of at least 28 mm wide. THE best tire pressure With CYCLOsportive we were on the second lane of the day with our bus. The participants in the Granfondo had only covered 30 km. Of which less than 5 km on gravel. Yet it was blind panic at the bus. We have all kinds of spare equipment with us for the participants of our trip to Strade Bianche. But it wasn't just our own guests who came to ask for help. In no time the bus was super busy. Flat tires all-over-the-place! Two causes. Many participants had not yet cycled tubeless and a second cause was tire pressure. We advise our guests (in normal dry conditions) to drive with a tire pressure of a maximum of 4.5 bar (tubeless). If you cycle with an inner tube, 6 bar is an excellent tire pressure for gravel lanes. But many stubborn Italians told us to pump up to 7 bar (or more)! They set off again with rock solid tires. You can always be unlucky enough to have a puncture. But tubeless tires reduce that risk considerably (Colbrelli won Paris-Roubaix on tubeless tires). THE right technique We don't have a Strade Bianche here in the Netherlands like they have in Tuscany. The gravel paths around Hilversum and the Veluwe are wonderful, but cannot be compared to the Italian work. The gravel routes in South Limburg come closest. If you have time, we definitely recommend cycling there. Although we do not recommend cycling a gravel route there with your racing bike :-). The bike reacts differently on gravel than on the road. Especially in the bends, the bicycle (at speed) has a tendency to drift more. Technology is always difficult to explain on paper. What is the best way to go through a bend? If you get into a skid, release the brakes! Stay calm and keep your upper body relaxed. Harder braking often causes even more slipping and sliding. Are you not yet experienced on gravel?
We have been present at GF Strade Bianche with CYCLOsportive for years.

THE best bike

We did not do any scientific research, but simply looked around us.

THE best band

Now that we have determined the bike for the beautiful Strade Bianche in Tuscany, we can start looking at the right tire choice.

THE best tire pressure

With CYCLOsportive we were on the second lane of the day with our bus. They set off again with rock-hard tires. You can always be unlucky enough to have a puncture. But tubeless tires reduce that risk considerably (Colbrelli won Paris-Roubaix on tubeless tires).

THE right technique

We don't have Strade Bianche here in the Netherlands like they have in Tuscany. Try to keep the body as straight as possible above the bike and push the bike to the inside of the bend. You will notice that the bicycle almost automatically steers in the direction of the bend.

It is also important to look around the bend. Do not look at the front wheel, but a little further ahead. Look at the point you want to get to.
